At Mayfield School, our PSHE curriculum is designed to nurture each pupil’s personal development, wellbeing, independence, and readiness for adult life. Across all pathways, PSHE provides a consistent, developmentally appropriate framework that supports pupils to understand themselves, build healthy relationships, make informed choices, and participate safely and confidently in their school and wider community.

We aim to:

1. Develop self-awareness, emotional literacy, and wellbeing

We support pupils to understand their feelings, recognise their strengths and needs, and develop strategies for emotional regulation. Through nurturing relationships, clear routines, and personalised support, pupils build confidence, resilience, and a secure sense of identity.

2. Strengthen communication, social understanding, and positive relationships

Across the school, pupils learn to communicate their needs, express preferences, and engage respectfully with others. We teach cooperation, empathy, personal boundaries, and safe interactions—supporting pupils to build meaningful and trusting relationships in person and online.

3. Build independence and practical life skills

Our PSHE curriculum equips pupils with the skills they need for increasing autonomy. Through real-life, experiential learning, pupils develop self-care, organisation, problem-solving, decision-making and everyday functional skills that prepare them for future learning, independent living, and community participation.

4. Promote safety, risk awareness, and protective behaviours

Pupils are taught how to identify safe and unsafe situations, understand personal space and consent, communicate discomfort, and seek help. As pupils progress through the pathways, they learn to apply this knowledge to more complex contexts including online safety, relationships, and growing independence.

5. Celebrate individuality, promote equality, and prepare pupils for adulthood

We value every pupil’s unique identity, learning style, and aspirations. PSHE promotes respect, inclusion, and understanding of diversity. As pupils move through the school, they explore community roles, future pathways, and the key areas of Preparing for Adulthood—equipping them with the confidence, knowledge, and skills needed to contribute positively to society.
