At Mayfield School we have chosen to devise our curriculum in line with the knowledge and skills promoted in the Development Matters Outcomes, Preparation for Adulthood outcomes for children with SEND, National Curriculum and The Engagement Model as this suits the needs of our pupils and provides a curriculum diet relevant to their needs. All stakeholders were consulted, and feedback informed the curriculum content.
Through their learning experience we want all pupils to learn new skills, embed the learning and transfer to their long term memory. We believe all lessons and learning experiences at Mayfield School should be fun, ambitious, challenging and exciting, and should give pupils the opportunity to apply their knowledge to real life learning and transferable skills across the curriculum.
Pupils’ physical and mental wellbeing and development is equally valued alongside academic progress. What they learn must be relevant and apply to real life learning in preparation for the next steps and for the key skills and core values in adulthood.
Mayfield School is a Unicef Silver Rights Respecting School on a journey towards gold accreditation, where we aim to create a safe and inspiring place to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. Our Rights Respecting Schools Award embeds these values in daily school life and gives the pupils the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.
Our curriculum includes well-chosen knowledge which is transferable, empowering pupils to have the skills and capacity to achieve their best while at all times promoting a journey to independence.
In order to meet the varied developmental needs of learners at Mayfield, we have four distinct Pathways these are: Engage & Discover, Discover & Explore, Explore & Enquire, and Enquire & Beyond. The introduction of these Pathways has enhanced personalised learning. Pathways enable careful alignment of curriculum content, learning environments and teaching approaches to pupils’ needs and promote meaningful progress.
